Slavery justified

These are photocopies of an 1853 article written by John H.Hopkins, Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont, setting forth his rationale for the justification of slavery. To be fair, Bishop Hopkins personally deplored slavery, and hoped it would one day fade away. But he held firmly to the position that the Bible both sanctioned and encouraged it.

Parallels to current (2008) articles justifying a ban on gay marriage are all too evident.

It is chilling to see how a fellow Christian can be so wrong!
